Title: Faulty Ignition switch?
Post by: Harry on June 22, 2021, 19:16:53
Gorgeous weather, top down - and my 230SL will start right up but shuts off as soon as you release the key from the start position.  If you hold a little clockwise pressure on the key after it starts, it will continue to run.  My guess is that this is a problem with the ignition switch.  Thoughts?  Similar experience?

Harry,
Sounds like it. I have had it on mine and replaced my neighbors as well. The same symptoms, occasionally shutting down and key wiggle required to make contact.... . The crimp tends to get lose after 50 years. They are repairable but a pain the get out.

Thanks dirkbalter.  What is the crimp that you're referring to?

Harry,
The cap is "crimped" to the body in 3 place on the OD. I am attaching a very nice write up from the German colleagues. Its in the first few pictures. I believe an English version is floating around somewhere too. A repro switch is also available from SLS, Buds...
