Title: Injection pump for 250sl
Post by: mauro12 on June 21, 2021, 17:58:21
Hello guys . I want to replace the injection pump in my car . I’ve always had an r22 pump typical from 280se but now I want to bring back originality .
I was looking in the tecnical manual and I would like to know the serial number of the correct pump that my car should have .
I’ve read that the 250sl ( european version ) should have this code : PES6KL70B120R18 or 18z. What is the difference between r18 and r18z? How can I know which pump my car had ?
In addition to that , I read that also the 250sl  right pump code is PES6KL70A120R18 and r18z. Doesn’t make sense to me . There is letter A and B . What’s that mean ?
If somebody can help me for a complete rebuild unit ready to fit in my car it would be great ( I prefer European source due to no customs fees ) . Thank you all .
Mauro

Check the technical manual. I think it will answer your questions regarding the difference in models.

That's H&R Fuel Injection, in Bohemia (Long Island, New York)...isn't that the place that had a bad fire?

Buying from USA something that cost 2000€ or more , it means to spend additional 500€ of customs fees. This is the negative side .
Talking about the right pump for a 250sl , im trying to understand the right code and the technical manual was not 100% intuitive. Difference between PES6kl70 A 120 r18
And PES6 kL 70 B 120 r18 .
Is written that both pumps fits the 250sl but there must be a difference between those .

You are right, the manual says  PES6 kL 70 B 120 r18 (only).  I checked mine and it is a PES6kl70 A 120 r18. Cant help you but interested as well.

Your pump is on a 250sl?

Yes, 230 motor was replaced in its early days and I kept the 250.

Anybody knows the difference between letter A and B regarding injection pump types ?
Also my engine number last digits are 000777 and is not clear if my car was equipped with the r18 or r18z. For sure not r18y which is specific for USA cars .

I tried to reach Marty without success a few weeks ago.  If he's still unreachable, you might try Tom at Yankee Diesel https://yankeedieselinc.com/.  He's more focused on rebuilding diesel pumps, but also works on gas injection pumps.  He's very knowledgeable and may be able to help.

May be the answer in lettering lies in the fact that these pumps were also used in the sedans / coupes / convertibles....

The R 18z pump is the later series for European delivered (250) vehicles. They had a richer midrange profile on the space cam.
The 18y is the North American version (fuel cut solenoid).
From what I have been told, The A and B differences on the earlier 18 pumps were the delivery valves.
The A had cone type valves and the B had ball type valves. I have also heard that some differences in the A and B designator had to do if the engine was a low compression version.
The later Z pump would be perfectly acceptable for an earlier European delivered engine as there was a MB TSB to replace the pump with a Z designator when there was a complaint of loss of standing pressure and hard starting. The Z superseded the 18 (A and B).
Often you will see stampings that appear to be over an existing digit. These were units that were sent back to Bosch and were internally updated (see photo)

Thank you guys for all your explanations. I just spoke with Hans fritzsche and he told me that he can overhaul my r22 pump and reproduce by the 3D printer technology the space cam of the r18 pump ( the are almost the same )and set up the flow values as the r18. In addition to that I will keep the benefits of my later r22 version with no solenoids and same oil circulation with engine oil .
