That is an early M127 series 1 or 2 engine.
Used in early 230sl and 220’s. The fuel injection pump and delivery was quite different from the later examples. The fuel was injected into the intake manifold instead of the head ports as in the later design.

Many thanks for your reply.
I have a 230sl with "normal injection" and I was offered this engine.
What would it be worth in a "barn find" condition?
Best,

The 220SEb and 230SL are both 127 engines but I was never aware that the 220SEb engine was actually used on 230SL's right from the factory. I've seen a couple of 230SL's with 220SE engines but I just assumed that someone had changed them.

That's clearly a 220 SE W111 engine (M127III or M127IV), clearly for the W111 but no longer for the W128 Ponton SE.
230SLs never had this engine....; all two-thirties had the M127II 2.3 liter engine with 6 plunger fuel injection - as we all commonly know.
220 SE engines are better 'parts donors' for our cars but not more... :(
However, lately 220 SE engines have become pricey as well, those are no longer "give-aways" anymore....
Don't know what they are worth now, surely a lower 4-digit number when complete...; for sure less than a comparable M127II - 230 SL engine
but as I mentioned ..., prices have increased here significantly too throughout the last decade...
If I were you (well, I am not), I would not buy it - unless you are in the desperate need of the block or the crank
- and unless the engine is very reasonable.
Good luck!

I would offer €500, no more, unless you really need some parts off it and that's worth more to you.

All,
Thanks for your wise words ... ;)
I will leave it "as is" and will continue with my beauty.
Be safe and enjoy summer,
