Title: Converter problem
Post by: Rob12345 on June 11, 2021, 09:37:56
Hi, I have a questions about converter for 280sl. I receive converter after rebuid by someone who is repairing those things a I AM confused. I have also old converter from different Mercedes. Repaired converter works very hard, while converter from different Mercedes works slightly.

Should it be so hard?

I am looking forward to hearing the answer on this.
But, I want to point out that the W113 has a Hydraulic Clutch, correct?
While most other automatic transmissions have a Torque Converter.
Maybe the other one, from a different Mercedes, is a Torque Converter?
Good Luck !
Mark

Torque converters were used by Mercedes-Benz not before the 1972/1973 car model families.

Can't say for sure, but possibly the hard shifting one is the result of improperly adjusted modulator linkage or improperly adjusted intake switch?

So. I will start from beginning. I have a pagoda 280sl from 1968. The car was rebuild. Engine, gearbox is runing perfectly. My car have a automatic trans with torque converter. The only problem is with the noise from converter sometimes(especialy when I start run and when I run uphill). I have two 50 Years torques converters. One is on the car. One is on the movie on the left side. I decided to rebuild one torque converter( left on the movie). But when I received this converter from machinist I saw that when I turn this thing inside by hand it turns hard. It is converter made from steel. I have Mercedes 220 also. And this car have a automatic gearbox with aluminium converter(on the right on movie) I check how it works. And for me, aluminium converter is working much slightly. So, I AM wondering, if the torque converter rebuild by machinist is good( or badly done). If it work very hard by hand, when I will put this torque converter to the gearbox, whether it does bot damage the gearbox?

Cannot shed any light on a potential solution to the problem, other than I have to agree that the unit in the 280SL is NOT a torque converter but a hydraulic clutch. Torque converters contain a stator between pump and turbine wheel, hydraulic clutches do not.
