Title: What’s going on here?
Post by: JamesL on April 30, 2021, 20:36:47

“E” registration would make it first registered in 1967, it has a 230 VIN. I get the 230 with a 280 block. Engines get replaced. But why is it called a 1971 car?

This seems truly disingenuous in my opinion.

How many ingenuous auctioneers have we known?

Good original 230’s now appear to be fetching higher prices around the world. That particular one had a lot of work and not too much needed to finish but £92k is pretty steep. RHD especially are trending up steeply.

I have always thought that all models will most likely equal up in price as time goes on. This is an example of that happening and there are plenty of other examples.  Here are two from Australia.

AU dollars at an exchange rate of $0.75 still makes them pricey.

Yes definitely a 230 SL represented as a 1971 car. Yes price is pretty steep, but if I only consider the pristine KHM cabrio interior that alone is around €8,000.....

I had bought my 280SL two years ago from the UK, although originally a NJ supplied car, red presented as “immaculate” for €90k and  paying another €70k to get it not in concours condition but almost there....

On another note the UK is usually full of traps for people not experts in the type and model of car they are buying... it seems that car dealers (auctioneers included) are over-rating their cars (they get away easier with misrepresentation).....

I will only say that i knew this car and the seller,he is a very happy for what the car sold for.
if the buyer puts the car to any specialist to finish it he will have to pull it a part and start again.

Unbelievable.
I had a customer interested in that car and we were expecting it to make maybe 35K tops.

Another one. Cal coupe with 12,000 miles. Seats and engine bay suggest otherwise

My goodness, 12K miles - would agree with James, perhaps showing 12K but most probably it has been over at least once. Plus you would think that for auction photos they would have found a gas cap somewhere!

My goodness indeed. Photos are one thing, but it has no cap whatsoever? What are they thinking? No way it only shows 12K miles/km. 112K. Or, more.
