I just found this EBay listing for a set of new MB data plates for vintage models. Manufactured in Italy , but available in Germany and the U.S., asking $150/set.

Do you suppose the buyer would then punch in his own numbers?

You have to do this in two ways. The finer numbers can be done at a jewlers and the heavy numbers I have no idea. They're reverse embossed - probably an early anti tampering deterent.

Someone was selling these at Carlisle Import Car Show a few years back. I believe he was out of New Hampshire. I used to have his card and if I look long enough I may be able to find it. I may even find that second checkbook I've been looking for. As I recall they were a lot less than these. <Boy that was quick--I did find it--the company is Pulfer&Williams out of Hancock, NH--- e-mail is dorwill@webtv.net and a tel#603-525-3532--no idea how old this info is or if it is still good>

I saw a company in the Techno Classica Essen (the huge German classic motor show) which sells different types of data plates for several MB (and other brands) vintage models... and the price was really lower! [:0]
