Funny! the seller id is "gullwingmotorcars". As if he deals exclusively with 300SL Gullwings. He must have cornered the market.

Perhaps he does. The owner was featured in an episode of Chasing Classic Car's where he and Wayne Carrini found a 300SL in a dilapidated garage. He has owned and sold over 50 gullwings.

Somehow I remember MB made 1400 of these between 1954 and 1957. Has anybody ever heard of a number left?

Of the 1400, 29 in alloy body and 1 plastic body.

The name of the firm is indeed "Gullwing Motor Cars". The name of the firm's owner is Peter Kumar. Peter and his firm have been around for a very long time and sell a lot of "classic and exotic and collectible" marques and models of all types. I used to deal with them for advertising when I was advertising manager for the MBCA's Star Magazine. Peter had been running a 1/6 page ad for years, along with the occasional classified most seeking to buy (not sell) cars. I have never bought nor sold a car through him or any other broker/dealer/showroom. If you poke around you'll see that he has some pretty good reviews...

I agree with Michael, Peter has many cars from all over the USA.
He has scouts all around the USA looking for vintage cars.
I purchased my 280SL from him in 2004.
His establishment is just 10 minutes from my house in New York City.
Just about every trip to the city I always pay a visit , never know what you will find.
A brief description of his floor of old cars.
All kinds, no areas of a particular car, all mixed up.
Here is the kicker, they are literally parked fender to fender and bumper to bumper.
If you want to see a car in the back row, you literally have to climb over the cars in front of it to get to see the one you want.
It is worth a visit to see his building in Astoria in Queens,

I forgot.
When I was there in 2004, there were a series of boxes labelled 300SL Roadster.
I did not know what it was , so I did not ask his price.
Some mistake, that will never happen again, anywhere. Always ask the price.

The chassis, engine and body numbers set forth in the eBay advertisement are not Mercedes-Benz numbers for a 300 SL. This is highly unusual for Gullwing Motor Cars and makes one wonder about the provenance of the car.
-
I believe I saw that car on their website last month. They may have modified the ebay add before canceling it, most likely it sold outside of e-bay. Looks like they put their phone number in place of the body and vin numbers.
This is the car in question. Vin #0457
