Title: Capping Things Off
Post by: John Betsch - "SADIE" on March 01, 2021, 14:28:53
The Jon Bernardi article in our recent Pagoda World about battery caps was very interesting.  The VARTA logo in the article has led me to a question:  what would be the period correct VARTA logo for the '60's.  Attached is a VARTA  logo that was on my battery when I acquired the car in 1988.  The battery had a tag of installation date 1982.

I also was once told (during a judging) that VARTA batteries were white.  Is that correct or not?

And could I add another question:  Is the "nut" on the battery retainer hook properly a wing nut or a standard nut?

Here is 49er’s 280sl original battery picture as well as my current battery picture. It’s a round Varta logo as well as a standard nut as opposed to a wing nut.

I can’t remember if wing nuts were ever used or not. It had been discussed here before.

I think it has been mentioned here on the Forum that wing nuts are not correct. I see in parts lists hexagon  nuts only. I am not sure if a wing nut would even fit (in the front) under hood.
