Title: Emission Control System (ECS) 280 SL, Model Year 1970/71
Post by: WRe on February 15, 2021, 10:28:56
Hi,
since this topic comes up again and again and there are apparently still some vehicles that are equipped with it, I have put together a few things.
The contents are largely taken from the "Customer Service Instructions Model Year 1970 Passenger Car Types USA Version" and the "Technical Manual" here.
I would then be interested in how many vehicles are still driving around here, whether the components listed here are also installed and who has removed the components.
The latter could also be included as a supplement to the document in order to provide support to the following.

My car is still around. Late 71 built in November 1970. But it is a German spec car, so not what you are interested in?

Thank You WRe, very nice presentation. It's nice to see it all sorted out and compiled in one place!

My 280 SL is a September 1969 build, but to 1970 spec. It has all the emission reduction components in place and operational. Tyler S replaced one of the control modules (near the coil) as one was for a manual car. The vacuum valve (round unit by the control modules) is operational. Mrfatboy also helped with linkage adjustment and exhaust test. We also had to find a "hockey puck" - the small round routing valve for the trunk mounted canister.

Nice work WRe!  I have the emission controls in place and working as well.  The fuel cutoff really helps cut down on the hydrocarbon smell when decelerating downhill.

For anyone restoring the fuel tank ventilation line under the car I used a black nylon tube made by Coeline and sold by Bel Metric in the US.  I don't have the size as my car is in storage but it is easy to measure the one you have.

Why, oh why didn't you just edit this info into the Technical Manual? That's what it is meant for...

WRe,

Great job on this!

I'm starting to work on a couple of issues that I now know are related to my emissions system. I found your writeup great to learn about the setup and function etc. since I knew absolutely zero about it.
My plan is to keep the system as long as I can find the parts etc.

Thanks

Tony
