Title: Exhaust tips square vs round. Part 3
Post by: RAY on January 21, 2021, 09:48:39
Just thought i would bring this topic to the forefront again.

Now that your fabricator has successfully produced your square tips Fernando, do you think there would  be a possibility that he would produce a batch of them for other group members, at the time there were quite a few of us that would have been interested.

If this could happen, personally, I think it would only be fare that those that are still interested, is to create a dead line to send there own round tips to you to save you messing around and of course any expense to you and of course agree that the chroming is also down to the individual.

What do you think ?

I would totally understand if you did not want to get involved in such a project but just had to ask to finally put this to bed.

Many thanks

Ray

On my part I would love to help out.  The problem is my machinist doesn't want to do any make any.

His process started milling an a pipe to correct inside and outside  dimensions, cutting off the end, soldering the  ring to create the square tips.  Sounds pretty easy but it really isn't. He works and charges based on time and material at $30 per hour.

I will approach him once more and go from there.

Thanks for the quick reply Fernando and your offer of help.

I reckon there would be around 8 - 10 members interested if he ask's but I guess that also depends on price, some may be willing to pay a bit more than others seeing that it would probably be the only opportunity.

Keep us updated if you wouldn't mind.

Which models/years had the squared tips?

Thanks

Mt understanding is that when the cars were in production, they all came with the squared off tips.

Anything that was ONCE manufactured, can be remanufactured.

Hauser's experience was typical for someone doing a one-off, like a prototype.

If anybody is interested this would be a great project to take on to see if they can be re-manufactured properly somewhere at a reasonable cost.

That's also my understanding - with the exception of the early 418 230ies, which had the shorter A113 492 0114 exhaust tips. Those rolled ends were rounded, not square.

When I bought my 1st set of new A113 492 0214 ones (the ones we are referring to here) in 1988 the ends were square.
When I bought the 2nd set from the dealer for my current SL in 1995, the ends were already rounded.

I would think so too, Mike.
There are aftermarket exhaust tips around which look pretty much like the (current) MB original ones.
Those aftermarket suppliers should be easily able to "make" those also with square ends for us - if enough request is there.
Unless those are again made in Asia ....  :o :(   , which I am afraid of.

Can someone post a picture to illustrate what you guys are actually talking about? I have a source that makes all kind of rare custom motorcycle exhaust pipes and mufflers.

So, the difference is a "slash cut" vs a "straight cut" end? Chrome tips? I can't really tell from the picture.

I think the issue is that the edge at the outer end of the Chrome exhaust tip is squared off, whereas the ones one buys today are rounded

I think the difference is whether the very end of the exhaust tip has been folded over in a squared/rectangular fashion, or whether it has been rolled in a more circular/cylindrical fashion.

Correct me if I'm wrong!

Just for clarity I marked it. A very good picture with rectangular profile of the lip.
