Hello
Does the 1969 model (US) have a vin tag on the drivers side pillar post. Mine does not and there isn't any evidence of one ever been there. The door jamb and engine have the vin number.
Thank you,
Bill Sansalone

My 1970 does, facing wood inside, 1/4 way up from bottom

According to the list of changes for the 280 SL (Pagoda World 25 - from Engelen's book) the visible VIN was required for US cars at VIN ending with 7114, 23 Dec 68

I learn something everyday from this forum. Never knew the later ‘69 models had the VIN up on the pillar.

Hi John
My '69 vin ends in 006106 and does not have the vin on the pillar post. Is mine considered an early model?
Thank you for your help,
Bill

The VIN number is the determining item. The visible VIN on the windshield frame for US cars starts at 7114. This was a specific federal requirement.
Bill, the "model year" for Pagoda is a confusing item which has been discussed a number of times on the forum. You can check this out with the search function.
For example my 280 SL is a 1970 model year specification (that is, has all the federal requirements for the US that were required for 1970 model year cars, but was built in September 1969).
Early or late is not really a definitive term. It is most often applied to the 250 SL, since it got caught by the large changes for the US in the middle of 1967. But The VIN is the key item for tracking when different items apply - car year, title year, model year, etc. have a number of variables.

Again thankyou, Mine is before that vin so I guess it is correct that I do not the vin on the pillar post.

If anyone is supposed to have one and it is missing it is likely folded behind the pillar cover. If you are not careful and you catch it with the cover it just folds under.

I do not have this because it's a German market car. Is this right?
-
Yes, it is correct. German cars (and probably many others) had the VIN plate on top of the firewall
