just scanned an old brochure that goes along with an old antenna i own. originality freaks will appreciate this.

I see in the brochure drawing that the antenna is mounted in the back and the brochure says "Heckeinbau" (rear installation).
Forgive my lack of attention, but I don't recall seeing a rear mounted antenna on a 230SL, my mind's eye says they are all in the front...should I get my eyes (head) examined?

certainly the front fender appears to be the preferred placement today, but this brochure clearly shows that rear antennas were being installed as well, at least for early pagodas.
my guess is that US cars had more uniformity in this area than euro cars, particularly on earlier pagodas.
i have seen the occasional pagoda with rear antenna. i'm sure the brooklands book shows one or two in it.
this would be a good question for achim or ed ebel from becker.

My 1970 280SL (Originally a US model) has its antenna in the rear left fender also. It's a Hirschmann, too.
However, I do not know if it was originally there. In the right front fender I have a hoel where an antenna would typically go, with a Chrome cover on it (size of a quarter approx -- well actually a bit larger, a Euro say).
I think (but I'm not sure) that the previous owner had a cell-phone antenna installed there. That might explain the two antenna positions, and I cannot tell which one was the original radio aerial.
