I think those are both the later one. On the early one, the letters/numbers are on the left.

Correct, both are illuminated ones. See: https://www.sl113.org/wiki/TransmissionClutch/Shifter

I am only after the lever and not the whole body etc.

My lever is very short and whilst i don’t think it’s been cut down, i have not seen one like it before so , i would like to fit a normal length one.

Garry,

I suggest you contact the guy who's selling this:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercedes-230sl-220se-Automatic-Shifter-Chrome-Cover-W108-W111-113-113-260-02-28/353098891558?hash=item5236558126:g:P8cAAOSwE6ReVuyL

He tends to have a lot of parts for pagodas, not necessarily posted. You could ask him if he's got just the shift lever.

There has been a change in shifter lever at 042 013330. Not sure it was about its length, but a change was there.

My Pagoda is 042 22 12948.   16 Sep 1965 so maybe it is classed as an earlier shift lever and it has no light.?

Yes, looks like your car is one before the change. I am not sure, however, if the later shifter lever was longer.

Please note: I have change marked in the same place (same chassis) for other elements of the shifter gate down under (!) the shifter lever, such as lever below, housing, spring, etc.. So you may want to investigate further if a longer shift lever will fit the rest of the gate mechanism, in case this change was also about the length of the shifter lever. That is, if you want to replace yours with a longer one.

Maybe someone more experienced will chime in.

Panel,

I know that a later shifter, i.e. a 280sl does not fit as i tried one from the Classic Centre some years ago and i just haven’t got around to looking back into it until now.

Funny that you mention this, but in my car, a 1971 280SL is a R107 shifter with the odd-shape knob that a PO has installed. At one time, I thought to change back to a round ball knob, but the whole thing, shaft and knob does not come apart.

Garry,

Have a look at this ad. You could ask him to measure the lever to see if it's different from yours.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercedes-230sl-220se-Automatic-Shifter-W108-W111-W113-112-26700-01/353334489692?hash=item524460725c%3Ag%3AUVwAAOSwOkRf6jh0&LH_ItemCondition=4

It's about 6 cm from the chrome shifter cover down to the hinge point of the lever. Subtracting that from the length of the lever would tell you how much the lever would be above the shifter cover.
