Title: Battery update
Post by: enriquegarcia on December 06, 2020, 14:10:27
Some 5 years ago I reported in this Forum that, after much shopping around in search of a battery that would fit, I was going to try the Maxx-124R from Walmart. Last week that battery died. It lasted 5 years and 1 month. This time I just went straight to Walmart (as much as I hate shopping there) for a replacement Maxx-124R. Five years ago it cost $98 with no core trade-in; last week it was $82 including $12 credit for the old core.

The Maxx-124R is a perfect fit, reasonable cost, very acceptable quality, and readily available. I also like that the colorful labels on it are vinyl stickers that easily peel off, leaving a plain black box. For those of us not obsessed with originality, I think the Maxx-124R is perfectly adequate.

Off-topic aside: While at Walmart I also bought a new 50A "intelligent" battery charger. It has functions for fast, regular, and float/maintenance charge, for engine cranking, for battery and charging system diagnostics, and others I haven't tried, and has a nice digital/graphic display. It is compact, super light weight, and $45 on sale (darn you, Walmart!). We'll see how long this last lasts; in the meantime I'm keeping my old "dumb" iron core battery charger.

same here.   I've always had to take a grinder to the one i get so it would fit in the tray.

Thanks for this! Just am starting to decide what I wanna do with my '68 280 SL. The engine was running a few years ago but haven't had a battery in it since. Hopefully going to get it sorted this weekend, and this should help!

Here's a link to my 280, if you're curious:

This type battery seems just right for my '71 280SL. Having recently purchased a battery hold down frame and hardware from M-B Classic Center, it looks like the frame will fit this battery perfectly. Let me know if you agree. Thanks from Suburban Philadelphia!

Ditto on all the positive comments.  Fits perfectly, labels removed leaves a black box.  Perfect for a vintage Bosch or Varta decal.

I used your recommendations and picked up the Walmart battery last night.   Perfect size made for easy installation, easier than removing its larger predecessor.
