Title: Dead Gear Shift on Automatic?
Post by: Theo113 on October 24, 2020, 13:33:52
Of course like many other problems there was no indication of a problem until last evening the Gear Shift did nothing.  Not able to engage a gear, or to start, or for park to hold the car.  The shifter moved extremely easy between selections with no results.  Could this be that the linkage between the selector and the gear box broke?  Any other thoughts?

Hi,
a well known problem is a damage of a round plastic shift bushing that connects the shift gate to the shift linkage, see https://www.sl113.org/wiki/TransmissionClutch/Shifter#Auto_ShiftGate.

The bushings on the linkage for the Auto trans fall apart. You will need 2.  The small end goes toward the lever.

A few plastic wire ties will get you back on the road temporarily, in an emergency.
