Title: Erratic speed cable under repair
Post by: yves on October 05, 2020, 12:30:57
I have decided during those windy days to solve the annoying erratic speed cable....  By the way i'd like to replace the gasket sealing the rear box cover plate , and wanted to know if i must take care of an issue doing that...?
I have already found an un tightened bolt which explain the "erratic" needle  but as i am under the car the oily gasket seems to be replaced. Can i only unscrew the bolts of the plate after draining out the box oil ?

some more pics showing the job...

The car is on the pit and the box is on some wood blocks

Do you know the tightening torque for manual and auto?

Hi,
I would replace the old style hexagonal flex disc with a new style round flex disc because these are improved and more robust and don't need a correct orientation. Price for a new one (e.g. Febi Bilstein 14930, ~40€) is out of all proportion to the effort.
Don't forget to allign the propshaft at the rear transmission mount: https://www.sls-hh-shop.de/main/en/mercedes-230-280sl-w113-22-enginemounts-c-3_61.

Thank you!

I wish I had that when I was fixing mine...

Now mine is not erratic, it just stays at zero and jumps to about 30km/h, then works normally.

To Wre ? Idon't understand what torque i must put on the nuts of the flex disk... The manual says  4.3m/kg and your pic is very different   14-15  m/kg or 8m/kg  ( for automatic box?)
It is now my mind which is erratic...  :o

i think these torques are for the flange nut on transmission output shaft. This torque is important to eliminate erratic speedo work.

Flex disc is here: https://www.sl113.org/wiki/DriveShaft/FlexDisc

And you really follow these instructions - direction sof bolts, etc. - everything to be done by the book. The torque 4.3kg/m is there.

Don't forget the thick shim-washer between the transmission mount and the mounting plate.

I have a problem with  the seal ring for the speed cable :
How can i take out the shaft with its pinion allowing to replace the radial shaft seal ?
I have tried "gently " with a hammer at each end without succes ... i have searched a pin somewhere  idem !
The BBB show another box and another situation  for the speed cable housing...?
PS: at the end (1) of the shaft there is a circular groove i thought it was for a circlip or an easy "grip" topull the shaft?

The gear is a press fit. You can press it out or tap it out with a soft drift (brass). Be careful not to mushroom the end of the shaft. Heating the gear will help, do not use too much heat and damage the aluminum housing. There is no clip in the groove, it may just be a reference for installation? I have always driven it from the flat ringed
end and out of the cable end.

Hi Ja17, sorry if t is an obvious question :  you say i can press from (1) on my photo to (2)

I began to press the shaft out of its casing but after about 2 cm  it seems to be stopped and the pressure increase without any movement...! am i right to continue....?

As long as the end of the shaft has not been flared from previous tapping, you should be able to continue. Your set-up looks good. I assume there is an opening in the plate for the shaft to move through?

Thank's Joe .... i have removed the shaft after warming until 100C°  and found why it was difficult: there was a kind of circlip ring around one end of the shaft that i didn't see....!
Now the gear, shaft, and "groove ring"  are on the bench.  But i wonder how i can extract the radial shaft seal   from its housing ...?
( the new one is  on the photo:  1 , the old one still in its housing )

Do you have a trick  before i do something wrong?

Refitting the cover with new seals , replacing grease nipple   (broken inside .... :-\)

the end ...!
I have taken out the nipple with a "tourne à gauche  " anticlockwise "screw"

Congratulations, challenging job this was, it probably looked pretty easy at the start ...

The flat washer always goes next to the rubber flex disc. So three bolts get the flat washer under the nuts and three bolts get the flat washers under the head of the bolts. Looks like you might have all six under the heads of the bolts?

It's not a hard job now......  ( i know the way ...) i have the pit and have already taken out the three culprits . and ordered 3 new washers   ;)
