This is a link to the cars for sale at the "Porch Auto Repair" shop in southern CA (gotta love that name). They seem to get SLs in from time to time. The one below is sold, but it's an interesting example of how our cars fold up in collision just like Messrs. Barenyi and Bracq envisioned:

(BTW, the engine bay on this car looks very nice. Plus, at the very least, you could use the hardtop for one of those SLK hardtop conversions that are all the rage this month.) :)

This actually a poor way to buy a car like this. It's as much work to put the used clip on the car as it is to buy new parts and put them on. It's whole lot more work than it looks.

In the UK the car might be classified as a write-off for insurance purposes. Depending on the catagory of write off it maybe illegal to rebuild it and thus can only be broken for spares.
If you rebuilt it the official paperwork would state that, thus any prospective buyer would know.....
Agree with the Dr it's a lot of work. Even re shelling a car takes time, even when you have a fresh shell to transfer all the parts to.
