Title: W113 engine/transmission swap: M110.989 + 6shift manual
Post by: Cubalibre on September 09, 2020, 07:36:33
Hello,
I am considering to install M110.989 engine (or very similar like for ex M110.987) from the 280SE W126 + a 6-shift manual.
What's the power of the M130 engine from a 280SL US version and what's the torque? I can find different figures in different sources.
Thank you in advance.

The engine may fit but the gearbox will not without modifying the tunnel area of the body.  Very little room in there.

I found the proper gear box supplier and it was installed in some w113 already.

I'll be surprised if the M110 engine will have enough hood clearance in the W113 body. The M110 engine is taller having a large wide and tall cam box for the double overhead cams. You would be adding a lot of complexity for not much more power. I would be thinking of using the later straight six, single overhead cam engine out of something like a 300E. It is Smaller, lighter a lot simpler and has more power than the M110 or M130.

I remember back in Germany in the early 80s, one of the guys in our small local SL owner's group had a 280 DOHC engine installed in his W113. It sat in their OK and the only thing we were able to moan about was the lack of a working tach in the car.

Thank you.
My idea is not about building a monster with much more power like Mechatronik with an V8 AMG. I would like to build a car safe, reliable even for a long distance, easier to repair (cheaper and accessible parts) some more power and torque. Impoertant to be able to go back to original without body works.
There is also some sentiment to the M110.989 - I used to drive my father's 280SE 1983 when I was in college.

The latest Pagoda World issue has an article of fitting a Getrag 6-speed (which is from Poland!) to the OEM engine.

There's nothing cheap about rebuilding a 110 engine. Lots of moving parts inside that thing.

Yes, I know - just received my copy the Pagoda World by post yesterday. Very interesting, useful source of information.
