Title: 280SL engine top US to Euro conversion
Post by: Berggreen on September 07, 2020, 18:19:08
Hi Pagoda-friends

I am planning to renovate the top of my engine in my 1970 280SL (man) in the near future, and I am starting to gather parts for this job.

Apart from the ordinary top renovations tasks, I am also considering to convert the top from the current US configuration to a Euro configuration.

The current US configurations of the top and FIP are:
Top: 130 016 32 01
Camshaft: 05 (122 degrees opening)
FIP: R24Y

What I would like to do is to get a “hotter” 02 or 09 camshaft with the longer 142 degrees opening. The 02 cam can still be bought new from MB, so that would probably be the most likely to get.

But a few question arise:

1) Are the 05 and 02 cam interchangeable in term of bearings, holders etc.?

2) Can I still continue to use my current R24Y FIP, or does it not match the hotter 02 cam in terms of timing or other configurations?

3) Should I rather swap the R24Y with a R23 or R25, which the late Euro spec 280SL used?

4) Any other things I should be aware of when converting from US to Euro?

Hope you can help. :)

Thanx,
