Title: Correct finish to a 280SL Wiper Motor
Post by: RobSirg on August 17, 2020, 15:04:09
Hi,

I wonder if someone can enlighten me to the correct finish to the wiper motor ( 280SL).
I thought it was Black body ( Matt or Satin?)with Silver Gal top and base. ( one on the right)
Today l received a replacement motor which the owner claims was the original finish. ( all Gal on the left).
Hope someone can confirm one way or the other. ( see both photos attached)

Cheers

Rob

I think original was all silver. Replacements had black body.

Wiper motors are natural steel, unpainted .  I suspect they were cad or zinc plated when new but not yellow dichromated. You can strip off the old paint and clear coat it to be correct.

Rob,

Is there any difference in the wiper motors for a LHD or RHD car ?

Thanks

Paul

Here is a photo of mine. Original to the car and not painted other than the base.

Thanks John,

I think that confirms the original finish was natural Gal.
Certainly no physical difference to a RHD drive wiper motor.

Paul, l assume you are asking would they (MB) paint a RHD one black? I think this would be unlikely in my mind.
I sent mine away to get restored and it came back with a black body - I’m going to check some old photos and other reference material but I’m fairly comfortable that it should not be black.
