Title: steering gerarbox recall
Post by: rmmchl on March 28, 2005, 16:23:37
Star told me on the phone today that everyone should have the steering knuckle replaced also when rebuilding the steering box, because they were defective. Does Dr. Benz know anything about this? Also, I'm confused even if I need a whole rebuild. I noticed some fluid leaking out of the bottom of the steering box. It has to be a seal. Star charges 450.00 for the rebuilt steering box and 275.00 for the knuckle. A place in California sells the seal kit for 35.00. Star says they replace all the ball bearings.

I recently had my steering box repaired due to leaking power steering fluid and, in the process, my mechanic told me that the steering knuckle needed to be replaced.  I had experienced no known problems with the steering, aside from the leaking, and I noticed no change after the replacement of the knuckle.  The steering box no longer leaks though.

I had oil leaking from the bottom of the steering box. Took it out and changed the seals only in the bottom cover around the main steering axel (that's where the leak was). So I ended up using only two seals from the set bought at SLS in Germany.

The seal set is located in frame 46c item 36, for EUR 32,60
