Title: overhauling a mechanical steering box 250SL 1967 suggestions?
Post by: Chris-Mckite on August 10, 2020, 14:54:56
Hello everybody,

I own a 1967 250SL with manual shifter and mechanical steering. European model.
The steering is very loose, driving in a straight line is almost impossible...

1. How can i check the play/tolerances  of the steering box?
2. Can the steering box be adjusted?
3. Can it be overhauled?
4. If so, where can i find a guide on how to?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Chris

Better look and see if the bushings in the steering shaft coupler are broken before you do anything else.

Yes, check for play in the coupler first.  If you can hear a light clicking sound from down near the pedals when turning the steering wheel back and forth through its free play you may just need to replace the coupler.  This is the first job done on my 230SL when I first acquired it nearly two decades ago.
