Title: New Water Pump break-in period?
Post by: McBenz on August 08, 2020, 17:03:09
I replaced the water pump on my 230 sl and I seem to have a small coolant leak. I read a Gates memo that indicated that all types of water pumps have a mechanical seal that has a break-in period of about 10 minutes of running, and that seepage from the weep holes is to be expected at the beginning. Is that the case of our water pump (4 holes-long version)?

I think if you had a new pump and it started to leak that you might want to return it. I've checked water pumps by using a vacuum pump on the leak-off hole. If it won't hold a vacuum, it won't hold coolant pressure either.
