I have read the great details around replacing the nylon buses which allow the automatic gear selection to happen. (Great forum as usual!) The lower one gave up recently, managed to "wire it up" to limp home.
I have removed the entire rod assembly from inside the car so as to insert the new bushes on the bench rather than in the car.
Couple of questions.
1) The new bushes are far larger than the originals (and I do think they were 1966 ones!) Were they really that size and have shrunk?? Dont want to fit the wrong ones.
2) Can I fit them incorrectly? IE what way around do they go in?
I bought them from "the SL shop " in the uk. Only a few pounds each.
Many thanks.

Try this old but perhaps useful thread http://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=3717.msg22543#msg22543
Also, you can watch Ken Bergsma describing the fix (and preventive maintenance) here:

Hi Paul,
I'm having the same issue and just received new bushings. Do you know how to correctly install the bushings onto the gear lever?
Option 1 in the picture attached has the the flat part of the bushing with the smaller hole towards the lever
Option 2 in the picture attached has the the rounder part of the bushing with the larger hole towards the lever
Thanks!
