Title: Interested in a 280SL with stick
Post by: Pastarnac on July 03, 2020, 16:48:21
I am interested in a 280SL with stick - project -  to keep me busy.

The car that I am looking is in the $35-60K range.

Prefer blue/green/red over parchment/bamboo interior; in general something that has a color contrast.

Send me a personal email with what you have.

Stay safe!

There is a nice project 280SL on BaT right now. Alas, it has AT and is white.

I think we had that discussion before, but if I wouldn't have one already and would want to buy one, I would definitely look for an automatic over stick. Having worked on cars all my life, I would not want the periodic replacement of a clutch in a classic vehicle.

Well, you can always pay someone else qualified to change the clutch.

When I was in college, my mother had a '71 280 SL that she bought in '72.  I liked the car, but felt the automatic transmission was its weak point.  2nd gear start too sluggish for my tastes and 1st gear ridiculous, good for pulling stumps.  This in full automatic mode, not manually shifting the gear selector level which of course, offered more control.

Later in life, I decided if I ever bought a 113, it would have to be a stick.  Fortunately I landed in one and am very happy with it.

Pic of my mother's car in the day attached.  She drove it for 17 years until it rotted away.

Like I said...we had that discussion before 8)
My SL is not a car that I perform drag races with and I have no need to beat a Honda Civic in acceleration.... ;D

Of all the jobs I do on 113's, and there are a lot of them, I would say that clutch disc replacement would be right at the bottom of the list. Hardly a viable reason for going with an auto.
