hello all. Hope everyone is well. I haven't posted in a while.
My late model 250 SL ( 3019 ) came with the white steering wheel the data card tells me.
The car currently has a black wheel from a 123 sedan.
I'd love to put a white one back on with matching shifter knob. But new ones are a bit pricy.
I have a white wheel but it's all cracked and split. It's from a 230 sl so it's period correct with bright chrome horn ring etc.
I read conflicting reports about steering wheel restoration. Some good, some bad citing poor quality and short duration before the cracks reopen.
Does anyone have am real life experiences with restoration?
thanks and good to be back,

Hi Zak,
I was given a white wheel by a friend and I have just completed repainting it in order to replace the black steering on my 250SL.
Petri on this forum(call sign Star63) recently posted some info regarding the preparation and repainting of the steering wheel. Try a search.
I am very pleased with the result, but will have to wait and see how well it wares.
Regards
Chris

You should check in the Technical manual here, as a 230sl steering wheel may not fit a late model 250sl..
Keep well

Check the Technical Manual.
The major change happened at chassis no. 0 02979 for 113043. But tech manual will give you all the details.

Thanks for replies, gentlemen.
My chassis is number ...3019, so just after the update.
I will check the tech manual.
thanks again.

Early on the left, later on the right
-
The one on the left looks more like a 190SL or Ponton wheel. The one in the middle looks like an early Pagoda or Fintail wheel.

The early one for the 113 would be circular, but the attachment for the chrome ring is through the spokes of the steering wheel like the one in the middle.
The one that is on the left in the photo is an early wheel - would it also be where the horn ring is the turn signal actuator?
-
The one on the far left is a 190sl wheel
The one in the middle is a 230sl/early 250sl
The one on the right is the later 250sl/280sl

I think our Tech Manual describes it perfectly.

I just did this one and it was tedious but I think it came out well. Maybe a little too white but from the original black I think it was a nice improvement.

What was the colour of the pad on white (ivory) wheels? Was it always one colour or did it change depending on the interior colour?
-
The pad was black as was the wheel. I changed the wheel color. The desire For the center was some contrast but I think I may get the interior color and put that in the center versus the black.
-
Thanks Jesse but I was referring to cars that originally came from the factory with ivory wheels. Was it just one colour pad or did it depend on the interior colour?
-
I believe the pads were white with the white wheel and black for the black wheels. There was not a color option.
