My car, when I bought it 20 years ago, has a lot of keys I never questioned until I got my '70 280SE. I have the large key for the ignition, another key for the doors, one for trunk and glove box, and one for the gas cap. On my SE, the ignition does the door, glove box and lock. The size of the key for my SL does not look like that was the same approach, although who knows who changed what over the years. Was there a difference between the 230, 250, and 280 over the production run?

My car came with two ignition keys, 1 door/gas cap key and 1 trunk/glove box key.

My key works in the ignition, doors, glove box and gas cap. One key, and I have two of them.

I had only one pair of keys and was impossible to find the key blanks to make the copy. Thankfully I found this website and they sent to me the perfect keys and now I have solved the problem. http://www.key-men.com/cars/hillman.html

I don't think that is a big difference between the models you mentioned above. I also had the same car model, used only a single key for ignition, doors, glove box. I met a different problem, I had only one key copy, and I lost the key while traveling in a different city. Because my car was pretty old, it was no point in approaching the dealer service for the replacements, so I approached the professional Arlington locksmith service (https://mylocallocksmithtx.com/) and asked for locks replacements.
