Hi all...my SL evidently had the carpets out years ago before I bought the car...the center console box between the seats has never stayed in place properly, wobbling left & right. It appears this was mounted using only two screws into the driveshaft tunnel. This makes no sense to me to make for a solid secure mount...was there originally some kind of contoured (to the tunnel) support that in turn was screwed to the box? Any sugesstions most appreciated...thanks...Joe

Mine too has two (one poorly fitting) screws in line with the tunnel holding it not very securely in place. I’ve always assumed it’s normal but now you mention it, it does seem out of keeping with everything else

Two screws and wobbling does seem out of character for Daimler-Benz...Well depending on the posts here, if there are no special supports underneath, I'll have to design one we can all use. I'm thinking of a thin hard Delrin strip with a recess that contours to the driveshaft tunnel, held in place by at least four screws, but flat on top where the console box can bolt...thoughts?

Two screws, one into each little console (bracket) on the driveshaft tunnel is correct, yes. Some info and pictures in this thread:

Thanks Hans...I didn't know there was a bracket under the carpet...I'm planning to replace the carpet after the car gets striped and painted thus summer...question...what have people done to add insulation under the carpet? Is there some kind of precut material? I would think this would be a good sound deadening move...

The carpet should not be installed over the two brackets on the tunnel but tucked underneath. Best is to make a cut in the middle of the bracket and then tuck the ends under the bracket. That will prevent the wobble.
Interestingly on my 1964 230SL there was a rectangular seamed cut out for the rear bracket; on the front the carpet was glued to the tunnel.
When I installed a new carpet I did not recreate the square cut-out but just tucked the ends.
I am not sure when this change was made but on my 1966 230SL the carpet was cut und tucked under the two brackets.

Well, the 280SL /8 in the photo is original. Manufatured January 1968. Carpet is certainly glued to the transmission tunnel, from factory.
And installed over the brackets...
