Does anyone have picture of the nuts that hold the "280SL" emblem to the boot lid? I didn't take my car apart so I am trying to find them.
-
One can thread the pins on the back of the emblem, M4 is suitable, and mount it with nuts.
Just like on the star in the center of the boot lid (trunk lid).
This will allow the emblem to come off for example for cleaning it, and also buff up the paint surface beneath.
From factory, emblem was fixated by means of two sheet metal clamps, see Pawel's picture

Hi,
as said by Hans there are only studs with clamps.

I am attaching a picture of the clips in question. I think fitting nuts there is much better idea, as Hans says.
What is important there - there are also seals that go on the studs. I bought the whole set from Mercedes a couple of years ago - for 280SL, Automatic and the star. But I fitted also event more serious seals under the clips. The seals are necessary because otherwise you will have water coming in through the emblems holes. Water will most likely stay in the lid, but will pour out as you open and close the boot lid and through gaps between lid elements. You will have wetness in the trunk and you will be puzzling where it has come from...
A 000 994 27 45 - pin lock
A 000 994 01 45 - pin lock for automatic
A 115 987 03 41 - seal
A 110 987 07 41 - seal for star

Thanks everyone! That clears that up.

The "clips" are called "push-nuts". They are very common to hold badges to bodywork and they are available in a variety of sizes at hardware stores. I get mine at the local ACE.
-
There is no question that the push nuts for the "Automatic" emblem are the rectangular ones, and push nuts for the 280SL emblem are the round ones when you have both badges.
However, on my manual (standard) cars I found the 280SL/250SL badges to have rectangular push nuts? No idea if they were the original ones or not - both cars have been resprayed in their previous ownerships. Curious to know what other people have found.
Thanks Pawel for the note about the grommet …...I think you just solved the mystery water leak in the trunk of my 250SL!
Also, a tip for putting on the round push nuts is to place the push nut on a small socket extension and push it up over the pin(as you are pushing through a hole in the inner trunk that is too small for fingers....easy to drop in between the layers)

For 113042
A 110 987 07 41 rubber ring for the star
A 000 994 27 45 push nut type designation
A 000 994 01 45 push nut automatic
A 000 997 11 41 replaced by A 115 987 03 41 seal ring (both emblems)
They are the same....

Thanks Pawel, what about 280SL’s?

In the earlier post. I thought I had checked for differences vs. earlier types at that time, but was not sure, have double checked now.
If I were to do it again, I would do what Hans advised - thread the studs and apply regular M4 nuts.
-
Be careful not to break the studs when you thread them. Happens easily.
-
My 280 SL has the rectangular fasteners and I don't think the trunk has been messed with. The 250 SL has threaded nuts, and it was a complete rebuild.
-
Thanks Johnny,
That is consistent with what I have seen.
I'm of the opinion that the 250SL/280SL emblem was fixed with rectangular push nuts, unless it was a Euro (or RHD) model Automatic version, which had the 2 badges. In which case the "Automatic badge" being the lower one, was fixed with rectangular push nuts, and the 230SL/250SL/250SL Emblem (upper one) was fitted with round push nuts through the holes in the inner trunk skin.
Curious to hear other people's findings.
Cheers
-
That would make sense because it would be easier to make an installing tool for the round nuts.
Thanks for all the replies. I ordered a kit of round and rectangle push nuts just to have them around in case I needed them anywhere else.
JonB, Can you tell me what the finish is on your rectangle push nuts?
-
They are yellow zinc/cad with a bit of overspray
-
The ones I have seen which have the possibility of being original also were black. The new ones are obviously gal or silver Cad, I'm thinking I might give a quick swipe with the Matt Black spray can.
I found the best way to remove the rectangular ones is with long nose pliers and twist/jiggle them down. At first I tried to pry open the centre clamp but that is very difficult.
-
Of all the cars, Mercedes, I have worked on or seen, have had the rectangular push on clips.
The round ones go to hold the wires on for the heat/vent slider assembly in the dash.
That's what I remember from my years of these cars.

Rob, my 280SL (007749 - January 1969 - USA spec tourist delivery) has the original push nuts and they are rectangular.
-
Correct Ralph, I’m agreeing with this. Same set up for my manual 280SL.
However, RHD Automatic cars have 2 badges.
The lower badge is “Automatic” and has the rectangular clips.
The upper one is the 280SL badge and is fitted with round clips. These are actually hidden and you need to push them through a hole in the inner trunk skin.
Having round clips makes it easier as you drop the clip into a wrench and push it up.
I saw 2 very original automatic RHD 280SL’s on the weekend and they also confirm this arrangement ( along with mine).
