I'm curious. It appears on my 230SL that a fitting with a banjo bolt has a soft washer under the bolt head but nothing between the fitting itself and the mating surface? Is this correct?

I believe they have metal seals on both sides of the banjo fitting.

I also would have expected a soft metallic gasket/seal on both sides but it doesn't appear that is the case when I look at some of the original fittings that I don't think have ever been broken on my car. However it sounds as though when others on the forum have broken and reassembled these types of fittings, they have placed such a seal on both sides? The coolant bypass tube on the head is a good example.
Thanks,
Harry

The coolant bypass hose always had two crush washers on each side of the fitting. If you'll look in a parts book or catalog all of the fuel line fittings like this require two crush washers. They all show (2) quantity for each fitting.

Wow - that's a good resource to make note of. Thanks.
