Title: Fuel Damper Revisited / Assy. solution / Function / Illustrated
Post by: Paul Cain on April 03, 2020, 00:53:40
I am in the process of rebuilding my fuel damper on my '65 230 SL.  I purchased new internals and was in the process of reassembly when I began to question to assembly sequence and function.

There was an SL Group posting form 2013 that was helpful but not definitive. https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=18221.msg133798#msg133798

So after some more research with experts here is the conclusion:

thanks Paul. I was concerned if input mine back together properly after plating the bolts and cleaning the cast. I will use this to recheck it.

I rebuilt mine and using the bolt to hold the diaphragm in place is critical. Without the tool, I can't see how it would end up too well.

This would be a great add to the tech manual if someone is able.

Since I have the time I have added it to the Wiki ;D

https://www.sl113.org/wiki/Fuel/Damper

For those of you looking for something to do during the lock down/quarantine now would be a great time to learn a new skill (It's not that difficult) and help contribute to the Tech Manual Wiki. There is plenty of new/great info in the forum posts that should be added. ;D

Excellent, thanks.

For everyone else: instructions for adding to the Tech Manual are here:

https://www.sl113.org/wiki/Main/News

I realise it is a bit much instruction wise, but you can pick up the skills relatively quickly, and really help all of us. Do note that for searchability, we'd like people to add text as text, and only diagrams and pictures as pictures. Upload pdf's only as a temporary measure, or if someone else has copyright to it (but allows us to post it). This makes is easier to find content.

And, for structuring your additions to the manual, have a look at this: https://www.sl113.org/wiki/Main/News#InternalLayout

It helps if you use examples of existing, well organised paged to modify your own...

After reading this I thought I must have lost my plugged when I took my damper apart to clean it. However when I look up the part on the attached parts diagram from Nemigaparts its not there. Was this plug only on earlier models? Also my diaphram is very rigid. Should it be more supple?

Thanks for any advice.

I see this part ("PIN"), PN A1863000274, in the part list for 127.981 and 129.982, I do not see it in the part list for 130.983 engine.

Other components (dumper cage, spring, diaphragm) have the same numbers across engines, just very early number for dumper cage was very early replaced by current one.

If the diaphragm is rigid, not soft and nice, it should be replaced.
