Do I recall correctly that the front engine seal lip actually rides on the space ring/collar, and not on the crankshaft itself? And that the spacer/collar needs to be sealed where it slides over the crank shaft so oil doesn't leak out between the two? I'm working through sealing up the oil leaks on my engine, and this is coming up on the work list.

Yes, there is a sleeve that slips over the crankshaft's snout that the seal's ID contacts. If it is grooved or damaged, it can be easily replaced. You can seal this sleeve where it contacts the crank back inside the engine. I think I used Permatex#2. The sleeve does not float and is held in compression when you tighten the damper. So any sort of light sealant on the sleeve's rear face should prevent a leak.

FYI, you don't need very much sealant on the backside and just a thin film. You don't want it to ooze out and into the engine even though #2 is pretty benign.
