I am replacing the carpets on the transmission tunnel. Can anyone tell me if the carpet should be cut to fit round the wooden tray supports or draped over the top of them?
The carpet I took off was just draped over but I feel that cutting round the supports would give a bettter fit.

From factory, the carpet was draped over, yes.

I had the same question last week when I fitted my new carpet and interior, i first tried draping the carpet but found it too saggy as it was raised by the console mounts, in the end I cut the carpet around the mounts and the finish was a lot better. I did fit bitumen sound deadening plus fell mats beneath all carpeting to a depth of half an inch ,this closed any gap between carpet and underside of console and gave a seamless fit, without this you would have a gap but still preferable to saggy draped carpet I thought.

Where did you get that sound deadening material?

The stick on diamond pattern bitumen from a UK classic car trim company called Woolies.
www.woolies-trim.co.uk £25 for 1.5mx 1.5m sheets, I used 3 sheets,heavy as hell and arrives on a big roll.
Plan was to sound deaden, tank and protect the new floor from any UK rain, if the carpets get wet I’d lift the carpet, the jute pre cut mats and mop the bitumen floor.
The second layer of shaped and pre cut tar/ felt mats are from SLS Germany and are expensive as hell when you buy the complete set ...which I did in a crazy moment.
Hopefully sound deadening qualities will be excellent, my own preference was a bitumen, felt, jute type underlay/ sound deadening over a modern silver foil type dynamat .
I may use the stick on bitumen in the doors as well as per original..ish

Good idea Dave H I will cut the carpet and use sound deadening.
