I have 6x14 Fuchs Alloys on my 280SL. I was reading in the tech section that "it is assumed" an adapter was fitted by the factory to mount the spare on the post in the trunk.
I do not have this, as the alloys were added later by a P/O. Does anybody know for a fact that something like this was available, does someone have one, can someone post a picture?

Hello Mike,
Original factory alumin(i)um wheel cars can be distinguished with the code 64/0 on the data card.
Yes, and AFAIK these ones had a slightly different bracket for the spare wheel in the trunk, but I cannot confirm for sure right now.
(Was desperately seeking in the parts lists but could not yet find the alloy wheel replacement for the regular "Erstzradhalter" (spare wheel carrier) A113 890 0081 :-[
I'll keep on looking ... )

Thank you Achim. I am aware of the option code. My car was not ordered with alloys from the factory. As far as I recall, the post in the trunk is welded to the floor??? If there was a different one from the factory, it would be hard to change. What I was reading was about an "adapter".

Mike I believe it’s actually bolted to the floor. I took mine out to refinish when I did my trunk.

Hi,
attached a picture of both spare wheel trunk adapters (steel and alloy).
...WRe
-
Cool! Do you have both? Can you take a couple of pics of the alloy wheel holder. I may be able to make myself one.
-
Mike,
I need one too. If we can get dimensions you can stop up and we can knock a couple out. Have lathe, TIG milling machine etc. A picture of the underside of the top bit would be really helpful.
-
Sorry but I've only this picture found in Pagodentreff.de. I will ask these guys for more information.

If memory serves me well, the spare steel wheel was mounted on the post with the outside down and the inside up. It looks like from the picture, that the alloy wheel was mounted the other way around. I assume, the spare wheel cover will no longer work then? Anybody here with an alloy spare in the trunk?
-
So, it looks like two of us would be up to make a post for the alloy spare wheel. All we need is SOMEONE to give us some info what it exactly looks like, with some dimensions.?????
-
Nobody seems to have an alloy spare mounted in the trunk...!?!

I would also be interested in one! :)
I will also go to the large Classic Messe in Essen, Germany in late March, and I will look out for one. Let you know if I find one and where to buy it. :)

I made one of these years ago. Simple to make out of steel stock, bolts in/out. Cover no longer works
-
Hi,
any new progress for this alloy spare mounted in the trunk?
...WRe
-
.... Cover no longer works
Why does the cover no longer work? The cover would be specific to the tire size, not the wheel I would think... Or is it because the cover is secured to the wheel?
-
Scott,
Remember the cover is also a tool bag with a zip. The steelies go upside down in order to facilitate the tool bag inside the rim, where as the ally rims are mounted face up, in the boot.
Therefore the cover might fit, but you sacrifice the tool bag space.
Regards
Chris

Ah! I hadn't thought of that. I guess MB didn't think of it either. Thanks, I know more now! Scott

I am also curious if anyone has found a place to buy a post for the alloy Barok wheels.
Thanx,

As soon as this restrictive situation is over, I will have some made. I will try to come up with the design, but a close-up picture of an original one would really help

Great, thanks Mike. I would really like to buy one from you, when you have them made. ;D
Unfortunately, I think the best picture, I have seen up to now, is the one already posted above in this thread. But maybe someone has some more?
In addition, it is also depicted on the original spare part drawings, like from here: http://mb-teilekatalog.info/view_SubGroupAction.php?lang=G&mode=BM&class=1&aggtyp=FG&catalog=249&model=113044&group=89&subgrp=001
Thanks for your effort and fingers X'ed that we can soon return to normal conditions. :)

Chris:
The parts catalog image is for the standard holder for the steel wheel. It is shorter, because the wheel is mounted with the outside down to provide the dish for the tools. The alloy wheel holder is longer because the wheel will sit with the outside up and the holder has to reach through the longer hub of the wheel.

Hi Mike
Actually the drawing I linked to above is for the alloy rim. The one for the standard steel rims are shorter and flatter as you also write.
See the standard holder here as nr. 115: https://www.sls-hh-shop.de/main/de/mercedes-230-280sl-w113-40-r-der-und-kardanwelle-c-3_69

Scott,
Mercedes probably gave it a bit more thought than you credit them.
The ally rims are stowed face up, in order to prevent any damage to the face, thus the long discussion about the higher/longer mounting.

The perspective in the photo is a little misleading. It seems the round part of the allow wheel holder is short also and it has a bracket-type support that lifts it up higher.
Once I cut some parts, I may have to play around with them a little to find the best solution. May end up being a custom part, not exactly like the original

Thanks, looks good. :)
Any update/new on where to get these?

This is a really nice picture. With this and the steel wheel holder, I can probably get one made. If successful, I make some more if the interest is there.
-
Hello Mike
I would be interested in one of these
Thank you
Andrew

It's all easy stuff except the top bit. I doubt that it is a one piece turning. It would weigh a ton.
-
I will use a thick wall round tube with a flat disc on top to accommodate the threaded hole. I will most likely use aluminum for the part unless steel raw material is easier to come by. Figuring out the correct dimensions will still be somewhat of a challenge. I will have to play with my spare wheel in the trunk to make it right.
-
Hi Guys,
Even if the new stand is a little taller and thus heavier, the Fuchs mag wheel is lighter than the original steel rim.
Swings and round a-bouts, comes to mind.

Hi,
we are one step further.
My research has received friendly support from the German SL Club Pagode. Although this holder is no longer available for sale from them (from their own reproduction campaign some years ago), we are offered to take photos of a member who has one and take measurements in order to manufacture our own replicas if necessary.
I would like to do that myself, but this member lives a few kilometers away in the Duisburg area.
So it would be nice if a member of Pagodentreff could be found there who lives in this area and can take on this task.
We will see!
