Title: What's the lowest production number 280SL (& 230, 250) you've seen?
Post by: pagodapete on November 08, 2019, 18:38:30
I heard a rumor of #00043 in Europe. It is reputed to be a prototype . . . It would be interesting to hear what others have heard about or seen in person.

Thanks, I had searched "lowest production..." and "lowest serial..." and found nothing. Following the link, I see all 230s (which clearly, will be the oldest W113 cars) but what of early 280s? (I'll search here for "oldest 280SL" and maybe hit pay dirt)

I don't recall a thread on early later models. I searched on "earliest"

A few days ago I posted a picture of #000015 which is discussed in this thread .  It is still in Italy and has been beautifully restored.

As to early 280ies,

one of the Pagodentreff members has got 280 SL no. 000035,
still with the factory-original two-piece hubcaps & rings ....

 8) ;)

A long while ago, certainly 8 years or so, there was a (full) member from Australia who claimed that he had 113044-20-000001...., so number 1 to say and RHD ....  ??? ::)
Supposingly his car was British delivery and later came somehow to AUS.

His car was red over white (white grey or so MB-Tex) and he posted a few faded pics
but never confirmed clearly that his 280 SL was indeed 000001 or something else.
His car was a (full) restauration project
and he later sold his car.

Never heard of that particular car again.

Our former president Ray Hays has got a very early 280 SL 4-seater (California) with a no. 0000170 VIN or so. Don't know the exact number
but still ....  ;)

Best,

Achim
(VIN number aficionado)

250 SL Vin no. 000001 is also still around,
somewhere in Peru.
The owner proudly posted pics of his cars here a couple of years ago:
white over red.
He confirmed his car with a pic of his dataplate.

.... and 280 SL no. 000009

... was on sale a few years ago.
European delivery, nice (but not perfect) car  - without headrests (which weren't available back then).

Interesting car - with a specialized detailed engine bay - for car exhibition shows
- in the same way as late Frank Mallory's car was.

 ;) :)

The full wheel covers started at VIN ending on 000045.

Listing of changes for the 280 SL published in the last issue of Pagoda World. Also Pagoda Notes has the full listing of changes (as far as we know -there are some missing) - sourced primarily from Engelen's book.

Wow, thanks for posting the pic of what 000015 looks like after restoration, nice that that car was put back on the road!
A look back to 2011....
