I just noticed that much of the synthetic clay (as I understand they call it) melted out my exterior relay under the lip fo the front deck lid opening. This thing has 3 short wires with one male 3 prong plug on the end. No identifying marks on the relay now that I have it out of the car. The male plug plugs into nothing more than an extension cord leading to the alternator where the make end plugs in nicely. I need to know what ORIGINAL is supposed to look like for a 69 280SL. When I Google the part number, I dont see anything that has the short wires w/ male plug coming out of the relay. if someone has the time to comment on this or take a photo, I would appreciate it. I just sent my relay to a relay rebuilder in Michigan, cuz I thought it was original. Now not so sure. Thanks for chiming in.

It sounds to me like you're talking about the voltage regulator, which is on the right inner fender. They are readily available online or from the Classic Center if you want to pay more for a correct one.

Thanks CT. But what is correct? If you have one on your '70, please shoot me a pic of it and any number that might i.d. it. I just want to be sure. And if original is NLA, I dont always like the current flavor, if you know what I mean. Im wondering if it is the Bosch 0192 062 007 which is also the MB 0021547406. i hope that is the correct one. Thoughts??

According to the EPC, the PN is 001 154 68 06 "Regulator and cut out".
My contact at the Classic Center is Thomas.hanson@mbusa.com. He'll take care of it.

Just a note on the Buru/Hella. These regulators are electronic and don't have internal points like the original Bosch. They are a lot more stable at regulating the B+ charging voltage. Especially at Idle.
