Title: What is it and where does it go?

We were given a 1967 Mercedes Benz 250SE to put back together when someone else could not complete the job.  We received a bunch of parts and while we figured out what and where most of the stuff goes we are at a loss as to what this is and where it goes.  If anyone can give us a clue it would be greatly appreciated.

I also wanted to thank this forum as it gave us some great clues and directions on how to put this car back together.
