Title: 280SL sold in Portugal by RM Sotheby's - "the Saragga Collection"

I was at a "single owner" collection Sotheby's auction last weekend. Near Lisbon in Portugal.
The 280sl in the photo was sold for 140 k euros ..... Much the same as the 190SL. Expensive seemed the 450SL ( maybe condition -2/+3 at best) at almost 50 ... The 170, a50s and 60s 300 Saloon seemed"cheap" ... And a "special " 600 went for +300k.
Interesting results overall with for 130 cars sold.
If you search the Sotheby's site all the results and photos are there.
Pictures are quite flattering as not all cars were restored to high specs even though some definitely were.

Anything special about the 280SL?

Stick shift?  Auto?

5-speed?

PS?  AC?

Or just an awesome restoration?

I'm sure with commission, it was probably like $165k USD!

The 280SL looks to me like it is riding low..... could be the picture or is it just my old eyes.

It had a 5 speed getrag that replaced the original 5 speed. No aircon. PS yes. Seemed over all pretty good, all chrome seemed perfect, paint job nice,  engine bay,  lights, interior etc ....but difficult to understand the price even though typically in portugal cars are more expensive than US as they pay an import duty which is impacted progressively by engine size and post 1969 cars also by co2 emission as well, and then a 23% vat if from outside the EU . Estimate was 80-100k. The 140k is all in price so already includes the commission.... Strangely enough the text in the very glossy catalogue described it as a very good "driver quality ".... I'm not enough of an expert to be able to judge it much more ...

A 50k usd pagoda in portugal would be a low end quality 4 car.

I suspect a $50k usd car in the USA would more than likely be a 4 or low end 3 as well.
