Routine oil change on my M130 engine this morning with 265k mile on it. For fun, I put my finger in the oil pan drain hole and was surprised to find what turned out to be the mangled outer face plate of the timing chain master link (photo 290).
I removed the valve cover and spark plugs and manually turned the crank shaft until I found the master link. This is the style with the two mini-c-clips. (see photo 291)
The chain has 65k on it, but the chain was last off during a head refresh at 242k (23k ago). My guess is this occurred fairly recently and I am happy to have dodged a bullet.
I will now try to replace the master link with a crimp style if i can find one. I read in the MB Technical Companion that the c-clip style is only to be used temporarily for replacing the timing chain and not for permanent use - but i am not sure if this is correct.
Maybe others who know for sure can weigh in or if anyone else has experienced failures of the c-clip style master link.

Make sure you insert the small connecting plate which connects the pins first. It is the same as the one in the center and the outside. (it is missing in your picture).
I use a standard clip, however, I make sure that the closed end of the clip is towards the side of camshaft rotation. I never encountered any issues with this set-up.

Mine has the c-clip and, as Urban, I placed the closed end facing direction of rotation and so far so good. If I were you, I would try and find the clip too.
