Title: How do I remove speedometer
Post by: nitram on August 07, 2019, 14:45:15
Hi,

I need help with an explanation on how to remove a broken Speedometer from the dashboard on my Pagoda 230SL -1964.

Does anyone know how to disassemble the speedometer cluster?

Thanks!

Yes, the Technical Manual will guide you through the process. In short, you'll have to remove the RPM gauge first, then the center cluster. Removing the steering wheel before you begin will make everything much easier.

Hi,
here you find some help:
- https://www.pagodentreff.de/diskussionsforum/threads/wie-baut-man-den-tacho-aus.2157/

I prefer to remove the driver seat too (only 4 screws), lay something on the floor to bridge the seat rail bases and lay yourself backwards to reach up into dashboard and disconnect holding brackets.
And be patient!

I’ve read the technical manual and debating about taking this on. One question is why does the tach and centre section have to come out to remove the speedometer gauge?

Just curious as just want to clean or replace inside glass on speedometer. Thanks

Hi,
if you want to clean the inside speedo/tachometer glass you have to bead the chrome ring on the front that holds the glass of the instrument with a small screwdriver. After you cleaned the glass you have to crimp the chrome ring back on carefully. To do this it's necessary to remove the instruments. After that you can't see from the front that the chrome ring has been off.

There is not good way to access the "keeper" or holder on the back of the speedo. The tach really has to come out so you can reach around to get at the back of the center cluster. The center instrument  does not necessarily need to come completely out but far enough so you can get to the back of the speedo. Also by not taking the center instrument out, you will should not have to disturb the oil pressure line (a direct connect to the engine) or the temp gauge ( a sealed unit so be very careful with the sensor line to the engine). Then you can access the knurled nut on the back of the "U" shaped keeper on the back of the speedo. Having small hands is also a plus.

I would echo the comments about taking off the steering wheel and the seat removal. Very easy to do and immensely helpful.

Just did this yesterday. Follow the steps in technical manual. I printed it out and marked them off one at a time. Be deliberate just follow instructions. Not hard just lots of fiddling. I broke the temp capillary and needed to send it off for repair.
