Title: copper washers for swing axle pivot rod
Post by: merrill on June 29, 2019, 23:21:34
i lost track of which washer goes where on the swing axle.
they both go on the swing arm on the "inside" where the swing arm goes over the rest of the axle.

The two coppers washers are different thicknesses.
One is 1.85mm and the other 2.15.

i have searched many posts and haven't found a conclusive answer.

in the attached circled in red...

any help would be great,  thanks in advance

The parts diagram shows both those inner washers as part 98, available from 1.9 to 3.2 mm in increments of 0.1 mm (part numbers 180 351 13 52 to 180 351 32 52).
So I guess the correct thickness will vary from axle to axle. Hopefully someone can advise how to set it up.

Dave
thanks,  I am usually do a better job keeping track of parts.

now to figure out which way they face when installed

Thanks to Andy Burns for this input
the cross hatches are designed for interference I think.  I would face that side to the component that is stationary.  From memory the body casing of the diff.  The smooth surface will be designed to run against the moving surface if that makes sense

well as my sunday morning coffee kicked in i remembered i have the technical data manual for these cars.

i found the attached below regarding the rear axle.

i don't really know how to use this info to set up the washers but i thought i would share with the group.

so decided to just go out and look at the contact surfaces for the copper compensating washers

turns out the hatch marks are facing the bronze bushing and the smooth side is on the differential side.

see photos

i may try to figure out which one goes where depending on the patterns...

hi
Gernold has confirmed the hatch marks on the copper face the brass bushings.   They are grease escape grooves for when you grease the brass bushings.

also, based on my research above the copper washers set the distance between the bushings and that is all.  it should not matter which side they go.
