folks what is the black spring loaded cap located in the engine bay on the bulkhead to the left of the fuse block. it apprears it is a socket or someting when lifts up the cap. i have looked at all the manuals to no avail and it looks as if its been there since the cars inception.

Is it that receptacle for the elusive, snipe hunt, rarely seen under the hood light??.

your right....i put a bid in for it on ebay but i'll be wiped in the rush.
Is this a rare option to have this receptacle?

The rare part is actually finding the light. New ones are available, but with a different style than the one shown on the ebay auction. Go to google and use kaco as the search topic and you should find the new style.
