Need Insurance Value - Shipping Interior for Refinishing
I need an insurance value in case of loss, for the interior (2 seats, door cards and top edge trim, dash and under dash covering, windscreen trim and pillars, sun visors, glove box, and metal pillars in the rear behind the seats), which I am shipping out for refitting. UPS charges $9 per $1,000 for insurance, so I am trying to come up with a round number to use in case they lose or damage the shipment.

That is a difficult question to answer for anybody other than yourself. What do you value the parts at? Have you checked into replacement costs?
I am shipping parts all the time, including to Europe, and many times I have a hard time deciding for how much I should insure.
Go on the safe side.

I agree with Mike, obtain replacement costs (check on the Buds Benz web site, they have drawings, part numbers and costs on there site. If you need help e-mail Dave he is a nice fellow) and insure for that, also I would add 10% for shipping cost in case it is all lost or damaged.

Thanks, I did go on the BudsBenz site, but they don’t list the whole seats there. Or, I couldn’t find them. I could see some of the other parts, but not all.
I didn’t feel right about calling Dave since this is a service he provides and I am doing it elsewhere.

There must be a local shop that can do the work for you. Those items will be very difficult to replace if lost. You should find a shop in your area and have the materials to do the job sent to them.

Still Dave i’m Sure will help you since if something goes wrong you would order from him right? Tell him that and you will see. He properly can help you with estimated ball park numbers and that is what you need.

In another thread that is on this vendor, Heritage Trim, there is a club member from New Zealand or Australia who is sending his interior to them. They have people do it all the time via UPS in the states and UPS is pretty reliable. I just need to give them a value number for insurance purposes but I don’t have any idea what number to use.

I'm just trying to get a "Ballpark Number". Is it $10K, $20K, $30K? I just need something I can provide to UPS.

But your not putting everything into ONE box to ship, so the total value is not applicable. You will need to value the contents of each box (depending on whats inside). Or are you shipping UPS freight and everything is on a pallet?

Make sure that you can actually insure your stuff for full value. I've had cases where I could only insure for up to $1,000.00 per package. Also, and this part is REALLY important: Make sure you package everything very carefully. UPS has a way of saying, " Sorry sir, but your item wasn't packaged properly so UPS will not be responsible for the damage to your part."
It happens more than you might think. However, a lot of stuff is poorly packaged. One way around this is to take it to a UPS store and let them do it. Lost parts are less common than damaged parts. I double box everything that's remotely fragile or valueable.

There is no way to place a monetary value an the aggravation caused by having to source replacements for those many items if they were to be lost. Have the work done locally or ship in separate packages to limit possibility of total loss.

To my experience the bigger the box/pallet you're shipping the smaller the chance gets of getting lost underway. Also using a premium shipping courrier helps as well. Can't compare "the local shipping courrier" to a company like Fedex for example :P
In most cases you should be able to add extra security options to the shipment like an enhanced security check / shipment priority options.
