Title: Paint Codes
Post by: Jonny B on February 03, 2005, 15:27:26
To the group.

I was doing some further research on the paint codes offered on the 113 cars. I used Engelen's book as the start point. I reviewed these with the data base on this site and found three discrepancies: (These are all listed in the site data base but are not in the Engelen book list)
131 pearl white - which is a 1973 MB color
608 ivory - which is a 190 SL color
824 sea green - which is a MB color for 1967 - 71 but not listed for the 113 cars.

Several paint chip books I checked support the 131 as only showing up in 73. I do not have an early enough book for the 608 (and, unfortunately, they are not the Glasurit or Herbert's books)

I am proposing to update the data base. Comments from the group?

It sure sounds like you did the homework. Anyone know what the source was for the current database listing?

I believe the current database was originally taken from a Yahoo! database that was simply copied from Meredith's Original Mercedes SL.  This book is known to be less than 100% correct.  Once the database table was on our site, members could enter new records.  People can make mistakes entering data.

I would say the ultimate reference to confirm a color as original to a W113 is a Data Card.  Any colors currently in our database table that can't be confirmed by two good sources (Engelen's book and some other source?) should probably be removed until somone can show a pic of a Data Card bearing the "new" paint code.

That's just my suggestion - what does everyone else think?

Rodd,

Sounds like a reasonable proposal to me. If there are some inaccuracies let's weed them out, or at least get some explanations that we can have documented to so we do not have to plow through this ground again.

608 and 824 are not W113 colors. 131 is listed as pastel white for 1963 to 1971 in MBNA's Refinishing Manual, but that may be an error....the horse's mouth cannot be trusted always.
