Hello Everyone
I was at my mechanic's workshop this morning and I happened to notice a white 280SL in for restoration. The interesting thing was that its VIN number ended in the digits 00001. Given that these cars were sequentially numbered, could this be the first of the model? It is a factory right hand drive with manual transmission.

:) Yes Mark,
I think you are right. We had discussions about this car a while back on the Yahoo forum.
This was :( the car of Andrew Bishop - or still is? :o He lives anywhere in Australia.
It is certainly nice to hear more about this car.
Can you make some pictures, including the VIN?
This is a historically very, very, very interesting SL. Not only because it is obviously the first ever built 280 SL but also because it is right-handed (113044-20- yes, Andrew reported that) but not left-handed what you whould normally expect from a German manufacturer.
All the best,
Achim
(1964 230 left-handed, boring VIN)

I'll see what I can find out. The car needs a total restoration and was stripped down when I saw it. The mechanicals are soon to be finished and then it is going for rust repairs before painting and retrimming. A big job.
