Title: Soft top cover locked down after i removed the release lever

HELP!!!
Im stripping the car interior out for restoration and I have removed the soft top cover release lever and then the cover slammed shut and I can't open it.
Putting the lever back in the hole doesn't work, Im hope I have explained my situation clearly.
Can anybody help?
