Hi, does anyone know where I can get a 250 head gasket that isn't a ridiculous price.

It seems like the head gaskets are in short supply. I need a spare one for my late 280SL and it is not available although several places offer them for sale. when you place an order, they come back after a couple of days and tell you they are out of stock. The last one I got was from K&K. All other places, no luck.
The only ones out there for a 280 are the early ones. I have two of these, that are no use for me.
I am planning to go to a local gasket maker, whose specialty is composite gaskets,  take an old gasket and ask them for a cost to duplicate it.
If anybody else is interested, let me know. We could get a batch made which could bring the price down.

Try https://vintageeuroparts.com

Unless I am not doing what I am supposed to do, when I go there and put in "head gasket" in their "search" function, nothing comes up. Not even the ones I do not need.

I did a quick check for the VEP site, and not even "gasket" came up with a hit. You could try a phone call to see if they have this or not.

Or you could also try Buds Benz - https://www.budsbenz.com/catalog/230-250-280-sl/a-engine

I have a gasket on order with Mercedes, I don't understand why they can't find out the situation with their supplier.
Does anyone out there have any influence.

I don't have any influence, but I just got off the phone with elring (the gasket manufacturer) in Germany.
The news are:

elring had issues with the fiber material that creates the gasket base. For environmental reasons, they had to reformulate the material and this is still ongoing.
They say they will have the gaskets available sometime in June. They do not expect to have parts in the US much before August/September.
Surprisingly, the demand is not that high. They have about 300 gaskets on order.
They do not have a contract responsibility with Mercedes Benz anymore, so they will not get first shot and have to wait their turn like everybody else.
I will keep an eye on it and will get what I need through my contacts in Germany  so I don't have to wait until they pop up here.

Visited the local supplier Cometic today. had a good meeting.
They cannot make the Mercedes Head gaskets due to the odd shapes of the Fire Ring.
Options are:
- Change the gasket to a metal multi-layer gasket, which outperforms the stock gasket design.
Tooling cost is approx. $5-6000.- and approx. $100-120 per gasket.
Buyer owns the tools and has the exclusive rights to the gasket and its distribution. Was done for the 190SL.
- Make the head-gasket completely out of copper. Cost of a gasket $130-150.-
No tooling. No commitment. Need an original gasket to pattern. - I will go this way for my 280SL, especially as I will need the 87 mm oversize

I have been waiting for a head gasket for a 230 which has a 250 head fitted, got the gasket in the last package of parts from SLS. They said they'd have them back in stock in January and they did. Don't know the price off hand but was glad to get it!
