Title: Door glass guides
Post by: Minerva on March 10, 2019, 18:40:45
A quick question,  I'm building back the doors and have re-bonded the lower guides to the door glasses. The upper guide that sits in the front door channel is next. It's a loose-ish fit in the top of the glass guide, question is how is it fixed there?
Is it bonded in place or is it free to move slightly only held by the protruding screw?
I'm using the original guides so don't know if they were originally a tighter fit.

Thanks Keith

The guide is bonded to the glass. The screw is only adjusts the snugness of the sliding guide on the long rail.  Felt is used to take up some slop before bonding the sliding guide to the glass. I use clear silicone adhesive for bonding. It is very good on glass, however the glass must be perfectly clean. Use alcohol for final cleaning. The clear silicone adhesive is very viscous and works well in a loose fit but it takes 24 hours to reach full-strength. You will need to avoid any movement before then. Epoxy is the other option you can get the fast setting, but it will be less viscous (runny) than the silicone.

Thanks Joe but its the guide that's sits atop the door channel. Is it bonded to the channel or left loose held loosely by the adjusting screw.

The upper guide is NOT bonded or glued in!
The set screw adjusts the pressure of the inside plastic jaw against the glass to prevent rattle; do not over tighten and create scratch marks!
It also prevents up-down movement of the chromed metal guide.
For-aft movement of the guide is prevented by butting against the door "whiskers". There should be no gap, see photo.

OK, the chrome upper guide. Thanks Alfred!
