This car is under auction on bringatrailer.com with 2 days to run.

My, my, my what a project this will be. But it does appear to be mostly all there. The prediction in the comments string that is part of the BAT listing, is $875K.
-
Auction closed. Bids got to 1.1 Million and it didn't sell.
-
WOW! and then some. That is just plain silly money. 1.1 million, and that again to get it where it needs to go. This is not a preservation car.

We had a crowd around my computer watching the final moments of the auction. What a letdown when "reserve was not met". That should have taken that car.
Then we watched the video where the water got on the accelerator pedal of the 300sl in the hillclimb.

That was enough excitement for one day.

I can tell you that the guy driving the Gullwing is a really good driver. 300SL's are not noted for being great handling cars and are not even close to a 113. Kind of like driving a truck with manual steering. Trust me, you would be out of breath and have very sore arms after a run like that.

One should note that most of the serious "big boy" auction houses, such as RM Sothebys, Bonham's, Gooding, and related would probably not allow an unreasonable reserve, if one at all, on such a car. They all know the values of the true collectibles. $1.1M and it didn't hit the reserve? That seller wasn't serious. That's a huge waste of everyone's time.
Like it or not, there is an intrinsic value to a 300SL, and allowing for regional differences, whether restored vs unrestored is the "daily special" and a few other factors, these cars will sell for their true value at auction, just like a number of other serious collectible cars with the marques Porsche and Ferrari. You may have some kind of oddball collectible (such as my brother's Qvale Mangusta for example) that might go for a steal w/o a reserve but for example, a Ferrari 250 and 300 SL do not need a reserve unless the owner has an inflated assessment of its value.
So, while wasting everyone's time, this owner knows the bidding will get to $1.1M. Perhaps he now knows how much to insure it for!

It shows that the silly season has finally peaked and classic car prices are likely to fall.
The people that have been fuelling these prices are dropping of this mortal coil and the younger generations are not so enthusiastic as to be paying $1000000 for an old bath tub that is slower than a modern family saloon.
I remember the first time I drove one in 1981 and I was not that impressed then!
Don't get me wrong, it's a thing of beauty but a Hollywood actress as a wife would probably be less hassle and cheaper!

Click on the bring a trailer link comments. Apparently the high bidder and seller worked a deal...

It may be different in different parts of the world, but here in the U.S., classic and vintage car prices, especially for luxury Euro cars are still on the rise.
We deal a lot with customers who are searching for cars and those who are looking to sell and there seems to be a demand that outpaces supply.
While 50s and early 60s Porsches are going from here to Europe, air-cooled 911s are commanding higher and higher prices here, so do Ferraris, BMWs and Mercedes' of the 50 to early 80s. Even some of the lesser Italian models like Alfa Romeo, Lancia and Maserati are picking up.
In the U.S. it is still more attractive to put your investment money into a classic car.
No Pagoda owner should be upset about this. In 5 years, you will not be able to buy a junker here in the US anymore for under 50K and great, true restoration cars will all be above 200k.

Based on a real story about a Gullwing I was trying to sell for a guy and every time I had a firm offer he raised his price. At one point I had had a real offer of 1.3 million and he still wouldn't sell on a car he owned for less than 4 months that didn't even run. He was going to double his money but it still wasn't enough. Suffice it to say we no longer talk to each other.........
Averice
I buy low and then sell high,
chisel me and I'll show you why,
I'm the one with all the money,
don't ask for none, don't call me honey.
I want it all and more than that,
I'll chew you up and eat your fat,
the life I choose, chooses me,
the more I get, the more it's glee.
I'm a little crazy from all this cash,
that's buried away in a hidden stash,
I'll cheat you all and have my way,
don't deal with me, the pundits say.
Chorus 1:
I'm love sick for my sweet honey,
ripe with greed and I loves my money.
There's no greater life than all of this,
than to be the king of averice.
And all those girls down on the strip,
all want favors and then a tip,
but I'm not paying for none of that,
I'm in love with me, that's where it's at.
I count my coins and pile them up,
I'd drink my tea from a rusty cup,
crush your car to sell the metals,
steal your bike and leave the pedals.
You'll never get the world for free,
I want the best and best is ME!
And when you pay, I'll raise the price,
I'll double down, it's oh so nice.
Chorus 2:
I'm love sick for my sweet honey,
ripe with greed and I loves my money,
there's no greater life than all of this,
'cause I'm the the god of averice.

That car is a tough sell. It showed up quite a few times in recent time. The fact that it is technically not a "Porsche" doesn't make it easier.
