hello
silly question here
I received a carpet set for my 66 230 sl and for the life of me i cannot figure out the position of the rear wall carpet.
on one end there is extra material (photo)
what is weird is on one long side of the carpet it it perfectly straight so i thought that long side would face up. but has that extra material?
the other long side is not perfectly straight, it has 2 small cut outs that seem to align with body of the car
near the floor
any guidance would be appreciated

Hi,
maybe this picture can help you.

thank you , that photo helps
I need to take a look at the fitment again. I have attached a photo of the actual carpet.
on each end there is extra material on the upper and lower edges.
if i install the carpet per the photo you attached and i align the top center of the carpet with the top of the rear wall i will have extra material sticking up.
maybe I will just trim the extra and move forward
thanks again

Matt, just curious where you bought your carpet. I would assume that the extra material serves some purpose or why would it be there. Hopefully someone else will chime in as I will be replacing my carpet this winter.
-
Here is a picture of the carpet set from KHM and it does not show any extra material for the back piece so I stand corrected. I also looked at German Auto Tops and they have some extra material on one end only.
Interesting that the tunnel mat from KHM has the rubber pad for the drivers foot but the German Auto Tops does not.
-
Have you asked the supplier what are these extra pieces for? Could it not be with/without the third seat option version? I did not see it, but I assume there may be a difference with the kinder seat - you do not have the wooden box.
I suggest - when you are fitting the carpet, try on also the covers for B-pillars and make sure it all fits well together.
Also: I do not know if you are replacing just this piece or all the carpets. I do not see the hole for light switch on the KHM set in driver's carpet. In case you need - SLS sell a nice plastic collar to finish this hole (in several colours) - you may want to take a look at it.
Other small items - finish of the gear shift in Manual cars or lack of finishing tape on bottom edges of the sills covers - just maybe not to forget, if you care about those, that is. I wrote that as I see thses items on KHM set...
Differrent topic, sorry, related to what Jordan wrote about the tunnel carpet: I see the rubber (or plastic padding) on the heel rest area on the driver's side carpet. I have seen it on a lot of original carpets. I remember when I was restoring my car it took me a lot of time to find a proper piece that looked like original (size and ribs, certainly without the part number that you would have on original) - I think the availability is better now.
But the tunnel piece: there is also a piece of padding there. I saw it on originals on early cars only. Was it there for late 280SL? I have the impression it was not, but I may be wrong...

hello All
thanks for the replies.
so, I have ordered and received a GAHH carpet kit from buds benz using the data card from my sl.
no kinder seat
which is interesting though, i have the wooden boxes to cover rear area behind the seats but the drivers side was carpeted... strange
based on the feedback, i will check fitment and most likely trim the carpet and keep moving forward with this project.
thanks again

Hi,
the carpet pictures on KHM's web side show 3 different types: 2-seat, 3-seat and caliofornia carpets, see https://www.cabrio.de/de/teppiche/mercedes-benz-2013-11-05/230-280sl-113/teppichsatz-230-280-sl-113-detail.
Matt, yours looks like a 3-seat carpet, means with a jump seat in the back. Therefore you need 'more carpet' on the oposite side for the foot space.

Matt, trimming the carpet on top would also require that you add the piping again. Are you good with sewing? ;)
The better strategy, IMO, is to return the carpet for a full refund and buy the correct one from a different vendor, that is, from one that actually fabricates them and not a middleman.
....
Interesting that the tunnel mat from KHM has the rubber pad for the drivers foot but the German Auto Tops does not.
Marcus,
the pad is optional. When you order from GAT you can specify to receive the carpet with the rubber pad added (no extra charge).

Alfred
hi,
the rear wall carpeting did not have any piping so I just trimmed the excess and then when i installed the
carpet i tucked it under the channel on the top of the back wall
looks ok
I will ask buds benz about that panel
the other mystery is i received what appears to be a shorter insert for the center console..
i will have to ask buds about that as well
thanks for your help!
-
Unbelievable, GAHH is literally cutting corners!
Matt, you need to cut the sides back to leave the opening completely free otherwise the vinyl/leather-covered metal corner under the B-pillar chrome trim will not fit correctly. See photos.
Did you add the clear plastic sheet in front of the wheel box (photo #2)?
-
Alfred
hi
thank you for the photos,
I need to check if there is plastic between the body and the b pillar space. I do not think there is any
Also, yes, I will cut back the extra material on the passenger side. I lined up the carpet with the panel on the passenger side. Guess I did have a lot of extra material.
thanks all for the help!

.../...a shorter insert for the center console.../...
The shorter insert is for when, on a later 280SL or specially equipped earlier SL, a small mount for controls is fitted. These buttons can be there to operate extra front light units, Autobahn extra strong rear fog light and/or heated rear window (on H/T)

mbzse,
ahh, thank you for clarifying
-
Matt, not sure what was your starting point with the work you are doing - there should be a piece of felt on the other side of that wall - do you have it there? Or you need to glue it too?
-
hi
i had a bare rear wall when the old material was removed. see photo.
I just carpeted right over the metal.
I do not recall felt behind the old carpeting.
matt
-
Felt should be on the other side of the wall, in the back - where the top is stored. It prevents hard contact between folded top headliner fabric and the metal back of the wall.
I found a picture where I could mark it.
-
Pawel
yes, i found the felt you pointed out in the photo you shared.
thank you

Hi WRe,
The KHM website shows the rear wood boxes in both the 2 seater and the 3 seater variants. Is this correct? I am currently missing the wood boxes from my project ca, which is a 3 seater.

Hi Steve,
I can't find the rear wood parts at the KHM website only carpets.Where did you find it?
There are several providers for the wood parts but expensive (SLS, Werner). In German Pagoda forum you find some offers (Admin D.Hahn, 1st link; Memo, ask them!

hi
below is the response from GAHH regarding the extra material on the rear wall carpeting
"rear wall carpet needs to be trimmed after glued in place."
